Ben Nevis Race 1959

On the first weekend of Sept 1959, Sat 5th , Pitreavie AAC became the first non-local club to win the 1st team prize at the Ben Nevis Race.

The Pitreavie team positions were: 2nd (& 1st newcomer) John Linaker 1hr51m33secs 10th Claude Foley 1hr56m53secs 24th Ronnie Lindsay 2hr7m15secs 45th Johnny Welshman 2hr22m17secs 74th Alan Milton 2hr53m21secs 86th Dykes Williams 3hr19m17secs The team result was: 1st Pitreavie`A` 36pts 2nd Clayton-le-Moors H 43pts 3rd Border H 47pts In those days the Ben Race started and finished in Fort William - 14 miles to the summit and back. John was leading coming off the mountain but was passed on the 2 mile stretch into the town. The race today 2nd Sept starts in the Shinty Park at the foot of the Ben - a mere 10 miles. The medals in 1959 were presented by Sottish Boxing legend , Dick MacTaggart, The Olympic Lightweight Champion from the 1956 Games in Melbourne. GMcD 2/9/06
