Tayside & Fife Commonwealth Celebration 2014

Published on Thursday, 16 January 2014 20:50

As everyone will no doubt be aware the Commonwealth Games are being held in Scotland this year with Glasgow being the host city. The Scottish government is keen to encourage local communities to celebrate this event by holding events that celebrate the culturalsporting or historic heritage of the Commonwealth.

To this end Pitreavie have submitted an application for funding to support the Tayside& Fife Commonwealth Celebration 2014. This event will be held on the 12th and 13th of April and will include a full programme of track and field events for club athletes, selected events for disability athletes and ‘come and try’ events for local youngstersnot currently involved in the sport. The event will be run as a mini CommonwealthGames and the invited clubs, Arbroath and District, Dundee Hawkhill, Dunfermline Track And Field, Fife AC, Montrose and District, Strathearn Harriers and of course Pitreavie, will compete under the flags of selected Commonwealth nationsThere will be a draw within the next few weeks to decide which nation each club will represent.

In order to try and create a real buzz around the event local schools and community groups will be invited to participate, initially by involving them in competitions to design posters and flyers, but also as participants, within opening and closing ceremonies and at a post event celebration party.

Understandably there have been some concerns raised regarding the possible lack of a Club Championship this year. Every competitor in the Tayside and Fife Celebration will be able to compete in up to four events and it has been agreed, following a recent coaches meeting, that the Club Championship will be based on results that Pitreavieathletes achieve within this competition. This is a one off decision for this year only and we hope that all athletes within the club will get behind this unique event and help to make it a great success.

More detailed information regarding the format of the event will be available on the website over the next few weeks.
