Fast Paced Fundraising - December 2019

Published on Tuesday, 28 January 2020 16:15

Nicola Moriarty from Pitreavie AAC, with the help of work colleagues from ION, has raised almost £5000 this year for the Scottish mental health charity SAMH.  Nicola raised about half herself by undertaking her own triathlon, ‘The Wonky IONman’, running a half marathon, swimming 2 miles, and cycling 110km. Her generous colleagues joined her on what was a very wet cycle ride in torrential rain and organised even more events themselves to bring the total close to £5000.  The final event in Nicola’s fundraising efforts was the Christmas HoHoHo 5k handicap race last Sunday, with Pitreavie AAC Endurance section, and Jog Scotland Ready Steady Go Pitreavie taking to the streets of Dunfermline in Santa suits.  SAMH is a charity close to Nicola’s heart and as she says,’ SAMH does so much to improve mental health in Scotland, and I wanted to support the charity by promoting the physical and mental benefits of exercise.’

The two running groups have also made a difference to other charities.  By making donations to the monthly 5 mile handicap race and giving the proceeds from the Christmas night out, they’ve donated £126 to Sightsavers, a charity that helps prevent sight loss, and £240 to Bloodwise, a blood cancer charity.  Members who entered the HoHoHo Handicap also generously brought along donations for Dunfermline’s Foodbank.

Ready, Steady Go Pitreavie!

Who are we?

Ready, Steady, Go Pitreavie! is the club's jogscotland group which works in conjunction with the club's endurance group; PAACE. Our focus is on promoting the benefits of activity for good physical and mental health. The group is led by a large team of jogleaders and a qualified Coach in Running Fitness. We promote the SAMH 'I'm here' campaign, with most of our leaders completing mental health awareness training. We are a friendly and social group, who focus on walking, jog/walking, jogging and running. The sessions are suitable and adabtable for all, and are a great way to get "up and running".

Our group is split into READIES; those completing the C25K program, STEADIES; our regular groupies, and GO is to signify those up and running and can go onto run whatever you want to achieve...often with the support fo PAACE.

Many of our Sunday group also attend the PAACE sessions and vice-versa.

The group is led by a large team of jogleaders and a qualified Coach in Running Fitness.

There is usually a structured C25K program a couple of times a year, and the group offers a lot of support via a private FaceBook group.

When and where do we meet?

We meet on Sundays at 10am at various scenic locations in and around Dunfermline. We advertise location a few days in advance via FaceBook.

What does it cost?

The first month is free, then we invite you to join the club for £30 a year. This allows you to participate in sessions on a Sunday, PAACE sessions on a Tuesday and Thursday, and a regular fitness session on a Friday evening, plus other benefits. For those who just come on an adhoc basis we charge £1 instead.

If completing the 10 week C25K program, the cost is £15 and this includes a group tshirt when you 'graduate' at the end of the 10 weeks.

How do I join?

For insurance purposes, we need you to join jogscotland and complete a PARQ (physical activity readiness questionaire). Both of these are free.

FAQs

Will I be fit enough?

You don't need a base fitness to join our group. All are welcome.

I am feeling a bit low, will this help?

Our leaders (and members) are very open about mental health and are great at listening. Friends, fresh air, and a bit exercise are a great combintaion and everyone always goes home feeling glad they came.

Can I bring my children?

This is an adult group with a focus on 'me time'. On an adhoc basis, if struggling for childcare members may request to bring their child, however this is requested first and the child is the parents repsonsibility during the session.

Can I bring my dog?

Unfortunately no. We are not insured to have dogs at the session (if someone tripped over them we would be liable). Also jogscotland promote inclusivity, and someone could have a fear of dogs. If we are at parkrun or other dog-friendly events or social runs then dogs are often allowed.

Do I have to come every week?

No, we have lots of members who work shifts or have family commitments. However we are confident you will enjoy it so much you won't want to miss a week :-)
