Pitreavie AAC Run Jump Throw Programme

Published on Friday, 22 October 2021 12:15

Pitreavie AAC’s new Run Jump Throw programme for youngsters in P1-7 has got off to a flying start, with over 190 children now actively involved each week in one of four sessions, and between 48-72 youngsters attending on any one night.  The youngsters are kept in bubbles of 12, with up to 2 coaches per bubble in line with Scottish Athletics guidance.  With the overall aim being developing movement and athletics skills, the main emphasis is on having fun.  The P1-3s enjoy themselves playing athletic based games, involving running, jumping, throwing, balance and co-ordination, while the P4-7s also learn basic athletic techniques.  Best of all, the inclusive and fun Run, Jump Throw programme is proving highly popular with the children, and as one parent said “she came bouncing out!  She had an incredible time and wants to come back tomorrow!”

Kate Crawford, Pitreavie’s new Community Athletics Coach, co-ordinates the programme, and her background in sports and competitive highland dance, as well as her degree in Sport and Exercise Science, have driven her enthusiasm for encouraging others to have fun being active. As Kate says, ‘Dancing really inspired me to be active throughout my life and to encourage others to take part in sport. ‘

The 6 teenage coaching assistants (whose qualification was sponsored by the club), 1 volunteer, and Kate form the highly motivated and dedicated team looking after the children.  It’s also a great opportunity for the teenagers to gain work experience. The club is hoping to put more volunteers through the qualification later this year.

Building on this success, Pitreavie is also organising Olympic themed summer activity camps for P1-7s in July. The camps will include a fun opening ceremony, mini Olympics, and a medal ceremony
