Pitreavie members have been whipping themselves into a frenzy over a local landmark they nickname the ‘Walnut Whip’. The spiral structure, bearing a striking resemblance to the famous chocolate bar, is at the abandoned Fife Earth land art project. Originally planned by renowned land artist Charles Jencks, it lies on the site of the former St. Ninians’s opencast mine, and its’ close proximity to Kingseat and Dunfermline made it an irresistible lockdown challenge for the Club’s Endurance section.
An inclusive Club event ‘Whip-Round’ over the whole of September allowed members to run or walk up ‘the Whip’, or alternatively run or walk to produce art on the Strava tracking app. The much sought after goodies for completing the challenge were a club neck warmer, one of the famous walnut whip chocolates, plus a voucher for the fastest up ‘the Whip’ or the best Strava art. Cam Warner and Kirstyn Suttie placed first with the shortest times up ‘the Whip’ (6.38 mins and 6.59 mins respectively), whilst the Reid family were first with their Strava art of the Millennium Falcon from Star Wars.
The inclusive approach combined with welcoming members have ensured the Endurance section of the Club continues to grow, with membership now at 190 from around 35 members only 4 years ago. Campbell Blair, one the key driving forces behind this success, recently receiving a Pitreavie AAC Award for Services to the Club. In support of the Scottish Athletics and Jog Scotland ‘Keep on Running’ campaign, the Club is currently offering free membership from October 2020 to March 2021.
