Forth Valley Match 2 Report

Published on Monday, 19 May 2014 09:48

The forecast was good for Grangemouth on Saturday as we headed there for the second Forth Valley match of the season. Due to a few last minute call-offs with illness we had a few gaps on the day, and as usual the athletes rallied round and were happy to add extra events to their timetable.

The track kicked off with 200m for all age groups and as the athletes headed over in shorts and vests to the start line the rain decided to make an appearance and duly poured down for next hour. Those competing in the field events also got drenched and poor Aimee Scott had to wait for ages in the rain before the high jump bar got high enough for her to come in at her starting height. She did well to win having been soaked for so long!

On the field we also had shot putt, long jump and javelin on the go for the various age groups and managed to fill everything apart from javelin (under 13 boys) and high jump (under 15 girls B). These are events that we often struggle to fill so if you think you'd be interested in having a practice at these then please ask your coach or contact our new Coaching Secretary, Susan Duff.

Back on the track it was the turn of Birthday girl Zoe Nicholson to compete in the 1500m, and to be honest all the distance athletes impressed at this match with most finishing in the top three for both A and B string. The best battle of the day had to be between the U11 boys in the 800m where A and B strung ran together. Both boys fought for the finish line with Conor Gourley only just pipping Cambell Dowie.

The day ended with the relays and these always seem to be the highlight for athletes taking part. As this is a real development league quite a few of the distance runners get to take part in the relay and show they are still good when it comes to speed! The Under 11 girls were again (like match 1) an athlete down so chose to run with just three (a non-scoring team). India - maybe next time you'll get the chance to run 100m instead of the double-leg!

Well done to all who took part, we hope you enjoyed the day and the added bonus of some Birthday cake. We are sure there were lots of PBs and once we have the full results we can publish them.

The next match is on Saturday 28th June, and as this is the final there will be a fuller compliment of events. We will therefore be taking a bigger team and covering more events. Selection slips will be handed out at the start of June.

Remember to bring you waterproofs as Grangemouth has a climate all of its own!
