George Kirk - Past President & Life Member

Published on Wednesday, 24 October 2018 20:54

It is with sadness that I report that George Kirk , a  Past President and Life Member of Pitreavie AAC , has passed away at the grand age of 95.

George loved athletics. It was a great part of his life. He was a great stalwart of the PAAC and played an emormous part in developing it into one of Scotland's major Athletic clubs.

He was a member of PAAC for 46yrs, having joined in 1972. George had already been involved in athletics in his native Lancashire before moving North of the Border. His first club was Blackley H, Manchester where he ran Road & XC inc Marathons.with a best time of 3h 9m 47s in 1958 prior to moving to Liverpool where George joined Liverpool Pembroke H. He was moved to Scotland by his employer in 1964 , initially to Paisley for 7 years before moving to Fife in 1971. The natural thing for George to do when he moved to a new area was to find the local Althletic Club and so it was the good fortune of first, Paisley Harriers and then Pitreavie AAC that he joined them.

Although he was involved in all disciplines of the sport , Cross Country was his favourite and he took on PAAC Cross Country Team Manager's post in 1974 and carried on for another amazing 33yrs.

However, as an Athletics' buff he became involved in all Club activities - if Pitreavie was involved he would be there..

He coached distance events for many years. He never turned anyone away from his group if they wanted to run - on occassions he's had 40-50 youngsters being put through their paces. He was like a pied piper. He'd  be there several times a week. That didn't prevent him coaching athletes to the highest level e.g Alasdair Donaldson who was GB international.

He was involved in setting up the Young Athletes T&F League ( the forerunner of the YDL(L) and was League Secretary for D1 for many years.
